Overview
The Kudremukh trek is located in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka and is a part of the Kudremukh national park. Following Mullayanagiri and Bababudangiri, Kudremukh is the third highest summit. It’s also one of Karnataka’s most well-known western ghat treks.
Mullodi is the starting point for the trek. Mullodi is a small village with about 40 dwellings. The distance between this settlement and the major road is 6 kilometres. There is no public transportation in this hamlet. However, there are a few home stays in this area that make it a suitable base camp for the Kudremukh hike.
How to Reach
There are a few KSRTC buses and a few private buses available if you are departing from Bangalore. Please be aware that there is no direct transport service to the start of the journey. You can book a seat on a private (Sugama Tourist) bus to Kudremukh, but you must disembark in Kalasa and take a connecting bus to Kudremukh in any case. You do not have to travel all the way to Kudremukh; instead, you must disembark at “Balegal.” The distance between Kalasa and Balegal is 10.5 km.
If you prefer KSRTC, board any bus bound for “HORANADU” and exit at Kalasa. Buses to Kudremukh depart from Kalasa. Take a bus to Kudremukh instead of taking a train. Take a bus to Balegal, a small village located halfway between Kalasa and Kudremukh.Mullodi is accessible via two routes from Balegal. 1) Hire a private jeep for Rs 500-700 per person from the Balegal bus stop. 2) Begin your journey right at Balegal. However, the first option is suggested because the journey length increases to (18+6) 24 kilometres, making it a challenging undertaking to complete in a single day.
From “Mullodi” to Lobo’s residence, the trip is moderately challenging. The difficulty level ranges from Lobo’s house to “Ontimara.” The route turns steep for a few short stretches. The walk is a bit arduous from Ontimara to the conclusion of the Zig-Zag route. It is moderately challenging from the end of the “Zig-Zag trail” to the peak. The overall level of difficulty is medium.
The best months to visit are November and December, when the area is completely covered in lush grass. From January through March, the grass will turn a brownish tone, and you will not be able to travel on a green carpet. However, there is still a risk of clouds at the summit. You will be able to observe the Kudremukh terrain during this time. It will be difficult to trek in the summer because the overall trek distance is 18 kilometres, making it difficult to cover the trip in the scorching sun. Avoid the wet season whenever possible. It will be quite tough if it rains, as you will be landing on leach land.Permission from the forest office is required. Permissions can be usually obtained from Balegal.

Things to do at Kudremukh Trek
