The Story Behind ScratchSleeves

ScratchSleeves

What is eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that is characterized by patches of dry, itchy skin. It may also be accompanied by swelling, redness, and blistering. Eczema affects people of all ages but is most seen in infants and children.

There is no known cure for eczema, but the symptoms can be controlled with the appropriate treatment. Treatment options include topical medications (creams, ointments, lotions), oral medications, phototherapy, and/or wet wrap therapy.

If you are having trouble with your child’s scratching, please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance. We would be happy to help!

Who are ScratchSleeves?

ScatchSleeves, like all great inventions, emerged out of necessity. When our son, Max, was 4 months old, his tiny face erupted with angry red eczema that itched violently. And he scratched. A lot.

On one particularly awful morning, we discovered him in his cot, covered in blood and looking like a horror movie. He had somehow untangled his arms from his swaddling blanket, worked just one thumb out of the flip-over mitts of his sleep suit and shredded his poor itchy little face to shreds.

We’d already looked on the internet for an effective solution to his scratching and hadn’t found anything that worked; so Jae got down to work with her trusty sewing machine, a t-shirt she didn’t want, and some silk left over from making her wedding gown. The ScratchSleeves – mitts that really do stay on

Because of the cardigan design, the mitts stay in place and the silk mitts effectively prevent razor-sharp nails from working their way through the mitts.

They worked so well that we gave a pair or two to a grating little girl who attended Max’s swimming lesson. Her parents thank-you note conveyed it all: “…for the first time in her life, Erin has slept through the night.”

Avoiding fresh scratches

She also awoke with no fresh scratches on her face, which was amazing. We couldn’t thank you enough for all of your help.” That was back in the early 2000s.

We’ve already helped numerous other little ones get a good night’s sleep with our original ScratchSleeves design. The size range and product variety has expanded to meet the demands of our clients over time.

And there’s still more on the way. If your scratchy little one needs more than our basic collection to feel at ease, just give us a shout and we’ll try to come up with a remedy.

The goal of ScratchSleeves is to eliminate the difficulties that parents may face when their young children scratch. It was a horrible experience, and one that might have been avoided. Everything we do and every decision we make is geared toward delivering an easy, effective answer for our clients since we realize they are having a difficult time.

Everything is covered by this culture: from making sure our website is as user-friendly as possible to creating packaging that fits through a regular letterbox, ensuring that parents don’t have to drop everything to get their order or, worse yet, wait a day before going to the Post Office to collect it.

If you see anything that needs to be improved, please let us know and we’ll do everything possible to make it better.

We’ve also begun to share the information we’ve accumulated about the practicalities of caring for baby eczema on our Parenting + Eczema blog – hopefully it will be useful to other parents who are having difficulties with their children’s scratching.
